For sustained growth, oil palms require micro, macro-nutrients and trace elements. Macro-nutrients include nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sulphur (S). Trace elements include, iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn). For optimum plant growth, soil must be capable of storing these nutrients and transferring them to the root surface for uptake by plants. While however, these fertilizer are usually chemically synthesized and its effectiveness is not achieved (plant uptake of nutrients are low). As its effectiveness is low, high dosage of these chemical fertilizers will be needed and this will damage the soil as well.
